A Beginner’s Mind Approach to Healing the World

This important question has been coming up a lot for those of us here in the U.S.:

What can I do to help alleviate all of the harm happening right now?

On an earthly level, definitely call your elected officials or send a message via the Contact section of their website—make your voice heard!

[I recommend 5calls.org for easy scripts.]

But, on a big-picture and spiritual level, it’s also important to think long term, and ask some more nuanced guiding questions.

Namely, how the heck did we get here?

And how can we prevent this from happening again?

This level of abuse didn’t happen overnight and it won’t end when one person leaves office or one government agency gets defunded.

The roots go deeper than that.

They come from a place where we’ve normalized the dehumanization of “the other.”

People doing the abuse know this, which is why they’re actively erasing and suppressing the voices of those who aren’t in the white majority.

When a person looks “different” and you don’t know their stories, it is easier to dehumanize them.

As a BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) healer, I’m committed to being of service to all, regardless of their background or beliefs.

I’m truly honored to work with everyone—from Black CEOs, to white artists, to Muslim activists, to Latinx educators, to healers of all stripes.

This got me thinking, how can I cultivate deep compassion for diverse communities and also push back on the systematic suppression of Black and brown voices?

A simple solution appeared—joyfully and expansively.

[ask and the universe shall provide]

It became clear that it’s time to diversify my inputs.

Specifically, as I’ve started tracking my reading since a few years ago, I recently noticed that most of the books I read were written by white authors.

To be clear, I love many white authors, but I also see the need to reclaim the BIPOC voices that have been silenced.

Our stories must be brought forward if we are to reclaim our humanity.

So this year, with you as my witness, the majority of books that I read will be those written by BIPOC and the global majority.

[I’ll be sharing what I’m currenlty reading at the very bottom of each newsletter, beginning with this one—check it out!]

Will you join me in amplifying global majority voices this year while expanding your own capacity for empathy?

Let’s set the tone for compassion and kindness together. One book at a time.

Through sharing our stories, we restore our humanity and sow the seeds of compassion within and without.

With intention, we heal the world. And healing begins with you.
