Books Save Lives

For most of my life, I was a voracious reader. As kid, instead of going to summer camp, my parents would drop me and my sisters off at the public library for the workday—true story.

As I got older, bookstores were a place of comfort as well as profound exploration and learning.

On my long and winding spiritual path, reading has opened my heart and mind to a deep well of wisdom that I may not have otherwise had access to.

But when I became a parent, I basically stopped reading books full stop. This also coincided with the explosion of social media, which definitely impacted my attention span, as well.

But in recent years, I’ve been inspired to reconnect to the wisdom of books. (Read about how I went from reading 0 books a year to 28 books last year here.)

And it’s become clearer and clearer to me how important it is to engage in long-format reading.

Last month I facilitated two separate book clubs—one for my reiki students and one for the parents at an NYC public school.

The reiki book allowed us to deepen our practices by taking a more nuanced look at reiki’s origins.

The parenting book gave us simple-yet-powerful techniques to engender more harmonious communication between caregivers and children.

Both book clubs were steeped in the medicine of community and both books, while very different in topic, allowed for major shifts in perspective.

When you shift your perspective, you shift the entire world.

You create space for balance.

You create space for wisdom.

You create space for connection.

This is the life-saving medicine that is so desperately needed in our world today.

So, if it’s been a while, perhaps consider this your invitation to pick up a book.

Even better, support your public library, and read a book for free.

Also, I have some reading recommendations for books that have supported me throughout the years.

It was a such a joy to curate this Bookshop page with lists for:

  • Spirituality and Healing

  • Social-Emotional Expansion

  • Memoir

  • Novels

  • Nature Wisdom

  • Parenting

  • Sacred Space
